Weddings: Katie and Mark 8-28-10

As a photographer in the past few years, I have become a huge fan of Traverse City.  It only was up until 3 years ago, I had my first visit to Northern Michigan’s infamous wine country.  And it was only up until a few months ago I had my first visit to Old Mission Peninsula where the wedding ceremony of Katie and Mark was held.  The scenic drive is amazing as you get to see both bays and at the end of the road is a lighthouse where you can walk around on the beach and take in the beautiful waterscape ahead of you.

Katie and Mark’s wedding was filled with their closest friends and family who traveled afar to attend their celebration.  And the day began at St. Joseph Catholic Church where everyone was scurrying to get ready and make sure the chapel was beautifully decorated.  One of my favorite things about this wedding was Katie’s gown.  It’s very possible that it was one of my favorites of the year.  Made with burnt-out silk and immaculately detailed, it gave the dress a lacy vintage look and it looked absolutely chic on Katie.  Along with Katie’s down-to-earth personality, she completed her gown with a pair of white cowboy boots.  Of course she looked absolutely amazing.  Shortly after the ceremony, the bridal party rendezvoused at Bowers Harbor Winery, a darling vineyard that barely overlooked Traverse City’s West Bay.  Everyone had a moment to have a couple of glasses of wine and really take in the day, which certainly set the mood for the rest of the evening.

It  truly was amazing how sweet and tender Mark really is.  I can see how he is such a lovable guy around anyone.  I also see why Katie and him are a fantastic pair.  Katie’s vivacious personality is fun and kind, which makes her so easy to be around, coupled with Mark’s laid back and mild-mannered personality kind of reminds me a moth to a flame.

The reception was the most sentimental part of the evening.  The quaintness of Northport Bay Retreat was an amazing setting for friends and family to be snuggled together with an amazing view of West Bay in the background.  So many wonderful things was said to the newly married couple that there wasn’t one dry eye underneath the tent that evening.  So much of that hit home for me and I’m so grateful I had a camera in front of my face because I too was an emotional wreck.

Katie and Mark,  it was an honor to have been a part of such a beautiful day.  You both are a beautiful couple that will accomplish amazing things!  Congratulations to you both!!!

Sip & Savor 2010

Califf and I made our quarterly trek to Traverse City’s Lealanau Wine Country earlier this month for the annual Sip & Savor Wine trail event.  It’s the wine association’s kick off to spring which really was a lovely weekend to do so.  Coincidentally, my sister-in-law and her boyfriend just happen to be up there that same weekend so they accompanied us during the event.

In the past couple of years, I have visited the same wineries over and over and this time I’ve made a point to try something different.  Of course, I found some new favorite places.  I could list all the places I went to, but instead, I am will makes some notable and worthy mentions.

Good Neighbor Organic:  Pulling into the driveway, Califf was cracking jokes on how we will be tasting Tofu wine.  I’m not sure why but he seems to think that when something is called “organic” that the recipe calls for tofu.  It’s times like these I question whether or not the school system failed him.  To both of our surprise, we loved the wine there.  As a matter of fact, it’s our new favorite winery.  They had Wildberry Wine, Cherry Pie Wine, and Chocolate Cherry wine, also they had this lovely riesling called Icy Apple in which the apples are picked in 10 degree weather.  I know you are thinking “But Chocolate Cherry wine?! Seriously?!”  You would think that sounds horrible but that too was a surprise.  As a matter of fact, we bought a bottle.  Really it makes for a great dessert wine, in which I have every intention in accompanying it with some chocolate cheesecake.

From what Stan, the owner of Good Neighbor Organic, said to us was that not only was the winery products and processing 100% organic and green, but also the 2nd winery throughout the state of Michigan to be  so.

45 North:  I have actually been there once before, but I wanted to take Califf and my sister-in-law there because they have an amazing strawberry wine called Sparkling Strawberry wine, and no, it’s nothing like the Strawberry Hill Boones Farm you drank to get your buzz on in high school.  In fact, when you smell the wine it’s smells just like fresh strawberry jam but the taste is much more tart and slightly dry.  Truthfully, it makes for a great summer wine.  The also have a Sparkling Cherry wine that has the same effect but I much prefer the strawberry taste.

Tandem Ciders:  While Califf and I were trying to find this place, we see this building with a tandem bike hung up on the building and thought to ourselves, “That’s kinda cool.”  Turns out that was where we needed to go.  Tandem Ciders was different mainly because the make hard ciders not wine.  Now for some who may not know what hard cider is, it’s sweeter than wine but more mellow than beer.  That’s really the best way to describe what it taste like.  Tandem Ciders uses apples some places like Cherry Republic will use cherries…(makes sense), so basically it would also be described as drinking apple cider but with alcohol content, not sweet, but again, like mellow beer.

Coming to Traverse City is always a joy for me and hope to continue to come to these events because it truly has become one of my favorite places to visit in Michigan.  For more photos of this event, go HERE.

Wine & Art Festival 2009

August 22nd was a kick off to the first annual Wine & Art Festival located at the Commons of Traverse City, MI.  There was food, dancers, and live music to accompany many of the local artists and wineries in the Traverse City area.  Even though it was a little drizzly here and there it was a successful turnout and plenty of wine to go around.

Great work Turtle Creak Casino and Leelanau Wines for sponsoring the event!!

Traverse City

Early August, I was in Traverse City, MI with my husband and friends for a camping trip.  Unfortunately, it was mostly raining the entire weekend.  So instead of being couped up in our tents we went to a couple of my favorite wineries in the area and had our own wine tasting.  It was wonderful and regardless of weather it was still nice to be outdoors.

Our first place was Black Star Farms.  It has a wonderful selection of wine, fantastic cheese, and you can pet the animals.  I love that.

Taste the Passion 2009

Last weekend I had the opportunity to photograph  a wine event up in Michigan’s Leelanau County.  The Taste for Passion was an event to kick off to celebrate Valentines Day by sampling different wines and tasting different chocolates and cheeses throughout the Leelanau wineries.

Friday night began with a wine reception at Nonna’s Restaurant located in The Homestead Resort of Glen Arbor, MI.  There was wine, cheese, and some decadence of little chocolates available for people to try.

The following day the Wine trail began and we headed to Cherry Republic located in downtown Glen Arbor, where we had the chance to sample aplethera of their signature cherry wines.

Then it was off to Longview Winery & Vineyard in Cedar, MI, where we were greeted at the door with glass of Cherry port wine and and a lovely chocolate confection as being a perfect pairing for the two.

After Longview, we went to Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay outside of Traverse City.  Black Star Farms is located along cluster of other wineries all located within a 2 mile radius from each other.  As far as being on a wine trail, I was impressed by how large the farm was.  Not only is it a winery but also makes nationally award winning cheeses, has  petting zoo, and a horse stable.

Then we were off to L. Mawby whose winery is known for their sparkling wines.  As much as I love my red wines, Lawerence Mawby’s sparkling wines are to die for and I always manage to bring a bottle home for my aunt, as she is a fan herself.

Willow Vineyards, Ciccone Vinyards, and Chateau de Leelanau were our last three stops.  Ciccone Vinyards not only did you get a chance to sample their wines but also had a wonderful minestrone soup available.  Willow Vineyards had a small sample of wines but you got a chance to leave love notes for your sweety and taste wonderful chocolate raspberry dessert to go with your wine.  And Chateau de Leelanau also had more sweets to follow with their wines as well.

After the Wine trail event ended many patrons arrived back at Ciccone Vineyards with a very successful After Party where karoke and pizza was available.  Several people came up to sing and livened up the crowd.

It was very exciting and very fun.  It was my second time coming to the Traverse City area this year.  Coming to the Classic was like being on live versions of the Food Network.

The Chef’s came from all over the country and you could check out different classes as to what dish they were demonstrating or what cheese goes great with different beers.

It was relaxing and educational.  There were a couple of tents that held wine and food tasting venues.   That housed vendors for Samuel Adams, Mount Gay Rum, The Grand Traverse Pie Company and so many more.

One of our favorites was the gourmet Balmamic Vinegers and Olive Oils from Fustini’s…that was so yum.  My personal favorite was the fresh made mojitos with a sugar cane garnish.

Check this out!!

Back in early May,  I had the opportunity to photograph a wine tasting event in the Leelanau area.  The Sip and Savor went on all weekend and I made it to a fantastic cluster of wineries in Traverse City.  This image below is now recently published in the Leelanau Peninsula Vinter’s Association website.

This image was photographed at the Ciccone Winery owned by Madonna’s father Anthony Ciccone, whom I had the pleasure in speaking with and one of the nicest people to ever meet.  I look forward to my visit back.
